White Birch Tree |

|
Fast-growing, white birch trees are attractive year-round. Their light green foliage turns yellow in autumn. Losing their leaves for winter shows off their colorful, peeling bark, thin graceful branches, and hanging cone-like fruit. Young trees have dark-colored bark until their trunks reach 1" in caliper (diameter). Plant against a darker background or green lawn to highlight the white trunk. Thrives in moist acidic sandy or rocky soil and prefers partial to full sun. Once established, tolerates some heat and dry spells. Prefers a winter chill. Water deeply and often around shallow roots in the first year. Prune in winter only after leave buds have formed. This will prevent sap bleeding. Transplant when dormant only. This tree can reach a mature height of 30' - 40'. Mulch to keep moist and cool. This deciduous tree is hardy between zones 2-8.
Bare-root
trees will arrive to you in a plastic tube via the United States Priority Mail
or UPS. The roots will be wrapped in damp shredded paper to insure freshness.
The tops of some trees have been intentionally cut back to encourage branching
and to help the tree survive the transplant. All bare-root trees will need
planted as quick as possible. Even if it is still cold
outside, plant your tree shortly after it arrives and water thoroughly and
frequently. Dig a hole approximately twice the size of
the tree's root. Fill the bottom half of the hole with topsoil and plant the
tree in the top half with the base of the tree at the soil line or just below.
Mulch your tree with 2" of shredded hardwood bark to insulate the roots
and prevent water from evaporating around the tree. Your newly transplanted
tree will need a lot of care the first year. It is not uncommon for a newly
planted tree to die back a little or even loose its first set of leaves the
first year. Do not fertilize your tree the first year, but do give it plenty of
water. Once your tree is established (after the first year),
it will require little care.
